Hi everyone,

I’m in the process of building our new house and just wanted to sound you out to see what you think. I am about to fix my SIPs panels onto my roof and  and they are constructed using 11mm OSB 3.

I propose fixing my Catnic Urban sheets using s/steel screws through the membranes into the OSB.

Catnic ask for min 15mm OSB to fix into.

I have consulted several different sources and they have said that it will be fine.

just wondering what your thoughts are on the matter?

Many thanks

Nick

Do you not require some ventilation? We used standing seam but it went into 22mm sarking board on battens creating a ventilation gap to our sips roof.

I’m pretty sure that no ventilation is required, using Tyvec Metal directly under the metal roof as a drainage layer, then membrane straight onto the SIP panel similar to the attached photo, but I will be adding 125mm Celotex below as well

I'd check that out as our supplier told us ventilation was definitely required. There's also been some complaints on here about SIPS not being great with noise and while that has not been an issue for us I would think decoupling the metal roof from the structural one by way of a battened out void would be a good idea (we also had a noise dampening/anti-condensation layer fitted below the standing seam panels).

Plus 1

Condensation may be an issue further down the line

Having read some other posts on this forum, some people have stated that Catnic Urban steel sheets are expensive compared to zinc and better quality PLX?

Any thoughts on this?

My contractor has fitted Catnic before and is therefore familiar with it, on the other hand, zinc or PLX needs to be done by a specialist contractor due to the folding of the sheets etc off the roll.

My nearest PLX approved contractor is Bristol and I live in South Wales, so nobody near to me!

Any knowledge on other products will be gratefully received, thank you

I couldn’t believe the fitted quote I received so much so I sent it to Ben at Catnic. It was £6k dearer than the PLX I eventually had fitted and they form the sheets on site. I also thought the PLX was better than the Catnic which looked more shiny/plasticky coated.

The advantage with Catnic is you can do it yourself whereas with zinc and PLX you need the experienced skillset. I was also really unclear on how the flashing around the Velux windows was going to be done with the Catnic. Overall I am really happy with our PLX roof and glad we went that way and not Catnic.

But like I’ve said elsewhere go with a product that the local to you trades are familiar with. If you go with someone from miles away you will never get them back. If your local builder is familiar with Catnic, the price is within your budget, and you like the roof go with that.
