PaulD
Apart from the increase of the grant to £7500, anybody else thinking this is the wrong time to be buying ASHP ? .... with so many new technologies allegedly around the corner ? with new working mediums such as CO2 and Helium ? even Octopus are meant to be rolling out new technology in December ? I'm off grid and have quite a large space to heat with UFH ... currently at first fix but really need to start thinking about a solution, but very tempted to hold off until Q1 or Q2 2024 ? even if it means putting something in temporarily (2nd hand oil boiler !) to get us through the winter, if we actually get to move in any time soon ! thoughts ? joe90
If your off grid how are you going to power your ASHP or anything else ?

And when you do replace the oil boiler make sure it is when you run out of oil so that's not wasted. And if you are thinking of getting a heat pump eventually make sure all your internal plumbing and components (radiators if used, hot water cylinder) will be compatible with a heat pump at the maximum water temperature you will choose to use. This will almost certainly cause your oil boiler to cycle quite a lot.

None of them are that new, CO2 has been around for quite a while; but is high temp at a very defined flow rate, next to no modulation, a bit of a one trick pony. If you hang about for the so called next best thing, you could be waiting a lifetime. Nothing wrong with the current ASHP offerings, either R32 or propane. You can spend as much changing from one heating system to another as you spend on the heat source. Is an electric driven heating system the right technology if you are fully off grid? Think that may be a better question

Went to the Installer Show earlier this year, some notes here. Several mfrs inc Mitsi and Grant are bringing new R290 HPs to the market. I think any other technologies will be too niche or too far into the future for you. 57 minutes ago, PaulD said: I'm off grid and have quite a large space to heat with UFH Presumably you have masses of PV and batteries then. A big thermal store might be cheaper per kWh than batteries though. How big an HP do you guesstimate? The new Octopus unit uses R290 but is only in 6 kW to start with. IIRC the new Mitsis go up to 9. Grant will be a twin fan so might be big enough.
