'Midcentury Modern' self build in Hampshire - hello

Hi all,

Pleased to be joining this forum  - BuildHub has already proven to be invaluable even at this early stage in the project :)

In October my husband and I purchased a sixties bungalow in a stunning rural spot in south Hampshire, with a view to replace it with... a sixties-style bungalow. (The existing was beyond saving.) We renovated our last house (an early Victorian townhouse), but this midcentury modern self-build is a different kettle of fish (in both scale and stakes) and we are definitely novices. The road ahead is a little daunting, but the husband is an architect and I'm a militant organiser (who will also be responsible for keeping sufficient funds coming in!) so it's a start. This will be a VERY long-term project for what will ultimately be our 'forever' home for us (and our giant dog Dexter).

To date we've sought and followed pre-app advice, completed the necessary surveys, drawings & rough cost plans, secured the site, installed a sewage treatment plant and done some enabling works (access, groundworks and services for contractors/static caravan). The static caravan that we will be living in should be arriving next week. Once we're living onsite, we'll be submitting the planning app and will start scouting for contactors for demolition and build.

Lot of hurdles (and mistakes, no doubt) to come. Drainage/foundations for deep, heavy clay will be a biggie. Biggest concern overall for me is correctly identifying everything that needs to be done and getting it scheduled in the right order... In the immediate term though I shall be scouring the forum for how to best plumb the caravan's waste drainage into the inspection chamber of our new treatment plant, DIY move of the telephone master socket and coming up with a cost-effective way to insulate underneath the static!

Welcome your thoughts on/will be searching this forum for support with:

  • identifying any steps/gaps that we've missed at this early stage;
  • advice for static caravan set up/living;
  • dealing with heavy clay and a high water table;
  • demolition advice and asbestos removal (not that we'll start that until we have the planning through!

More generally, if there are any locals on here or like-minded mid-century modern enthusiasts, do say hello!! 👋
