Yours is one of the builds I’ve followed… it looks lovely. You must be delighted with it :)

Thank you. We are so far. Just wish we were further along. But these things take time.

Indeed they do. I’m hoping for 3 years to the point we can move in, but longer to get it properly finished…

  • 9 months later...

Can’t believe I’m posting this on Christmas Day, but at a bit of a loose end while the rest of the family watch Strictly :)

Progress has been very slow for a variety of reasons, but we’re now moving towards a final design for our planning app. We’re pretty happy with the layout, but one of the things we’re agonising over is how we deal with the entrance…

We have a double height hall, which will include a staircase and central ‘feature’. There’s also a long view through the building. Our current layout is something like this…

When you walk through the front door there’s a bank of cupboards for coats & shoes, probably with an integrated bench. Turn left, then right and you have the long view through the house to the garden. A few steps and you’re into the full height area. Look left and there’s another view through to the garden.

The thought process is that the enclosed coat/boot area gives a little privacy when opening the door, so there’s no real view into the house. Moving further into the house, visitors (and us, obviously!) will first get the long view, then the double height hall, so it’s kind of drip-fed rather then all being delivered in one hit, if that makes sense? The first floor above the coat/boot area will be a library/study area, overlooking the hall.

Moving the front door towards the utility room would allow the ‘through the house’ view from the door.

We’re definitely leaning towards the first option, but would be very interested for any thoughts, alternatives or examples of what others have done :)

Merry Christmas 🥳

Thought I’d add a few more images of the layout/design we’re leaning toward…

The 3d visuals aren’t exactly photorealistic, but they help illustrate what we’re aiming to achieve.

Last one…

The project is actually an extension… the existing walls are shaded orange below. The design requires minimal messing around with what’s already there. The two walls that will remain external will have EWI and the rest of the house will be 300mm cavity with full fill insulation). We contemplated knocking down and starting from scratch, but would much prefer to utilise the existing building.
