Wooden planters

SWMBO wants something like these .

They are rather expensive to buy . But timber seems expensive also - what’s the cheapest suitable timber I could use ?

Tanalised sawn timber, 4x1 or 6x1. I have made quiet a few similar, should last 10years (if lined properly).

A mate of mine makes those sorts of planters.

No idea what he charges, can ask him.

You got any dimensions?

 

I usually knock things up from timber I have laying about.

By the time an inch of timber has rotted through, it is time for a change anyway.

Base of it just slatted timber ?

What I tend to do is line it with black plastic, drill some 50mm holes in the wood, puncture the plastic lining in the middle of this hole, put a piece of old crock over the hole to stop soil escaping, this keeps the water away from the wood as much as possible. Another choice of wood is from old pallets, not sure what “breed” the wood is but lasts ages outside and great for making compost heaps.
