Hi, its good to see an excellent build forum.

Over the last few days I have searched for ASHP, buffer tanks and UFH and I said to myself I would like to participate here at BuildHub.

A little about myself…I left Portsmouth for London and in the earlier 70’s I squatted in several houses, London was very drab, dirty and cold with no real housing market. It was not unknown that council tenants would give keys as they left their old properties before demolition. In time squatting became more regulated with councils nurturing our community spirit of improvement. And so as a student I learnt about mucking in and helping in all the trades of building and repairing. And I am still learning.

And then after 7 years of study in the mid 80’s I installed my 1st Vaillant combo boiler with only perimeter heating radiators in a commercial building in central London. I sold it on some 4 years later. A friend of my sister got me involved in ‘thinking’ about plumbing. So, I had never plumbed before and with the two sets of manuals I just got it done without any faff. This was in the day when I did all sides of the install. Now I cannot do this, I am running out of puff and we sold our two cars 10 years ago so ‘can’t drive to buy’, and things are more technical and legal and thus stricter, but I plan to install a basement level of UFH in 2022 in the house that I have been in since 1987. Ground and 1st floor UFH  from Nu-Heat was all installed by me with a Valiant boiler back in 2000.

In all I have installed 4 valiant boilers before their reliability dropped off.

I now have had an Atmos boiler for 7 years, and it is a pleasure.

Earlier this year we had a Harvey Water Softener installed in our 4 storey house and all the calcium grud has now gone. I only wish I had this done much earlier - don’t we all.

I have been improving things at this Grade II listed house for 34 plus years and plan to increase the comfort levels in view of the EPC requirements now needed, I do not have a certificate at present but there is scope from B to E.  A search showed this range of near identical houses and council flats.

Anyway, when it comes to plumbing I can build in new components. Not so good at rectifying when things fail, but I do try.

What I want to know about is…

The ARISTON  cylinder was supplied with Evacuated Solar Tubes in 2009 that have worked and still produce hot water in the summer months to as high as 70*C. The cylinder has an Pro-Tech anti-corrosion system fitted but has come away in my hands as I sort to clean and investigate stains, leaks and how I might fit two jackets over the cylinder, and lag the pipes with non-corroding foam. The Harvey’s Water Softener I presume has now nulled the use of the Pro-Tech system. The corrosion on the end of the red lead was so bad that I cannot fully determine how it was fitted to the ‘spigot’ on the cylinder. The crimp spade that I have fitted is incorrect, it ought to have had a crimp spade with an flat ‘washer’ end so that it could be clamped with a 2mm nut to the inner conducting part of the ’spigot’, the outer part is brass!

So the question is can this be tapped to take a 2mm metal - which metal - stud with a nut?

Or should I just save myself some work. I do not want to puncture a hole through the cylinder!

A penny for your thoughts guys.

Thank you

John

Hi and welcome.  That's quite an introduction post.

Best post your individual questions as separate threads in the appropriate sections.

Don't get disheartened about not being allowed to do stuff yourself, there are still plenty of things you are allowed to do, but gas is not one of them.
