Programmable/Smart TRV’s

Recommended Posts

I’m thinking about this as the next stop in my heating upgrade.

im no tech Luddite, but do want things to work when the internet drops out,,which is regular for my area.

we use Alexa for  playing general music in the house, so have about 5 of them scattered about.

I see the Tado system works with Alexa, but do these units normally work with an app on a phone or say a central tablet too?

15 radiators/towel rails in total so would add some over a few years assuming that they keep old technology supported?

any pointers in the smart trv area?

i have the Hive system from british gas, its very easy to install. The rad trv's are excellent as they allow you to manage heat in different rooms much easier.

When researching devices I find it useful to lookup the Home Assistant integration docs. Even if you don't plan to use Home Assistant, it's a useful guide for whether the devices need cloud connectivity or can just work directly via the local network, for more advanced API integrations.

For example here's the page for Hive TRVs, which says the IoT class is cloud polling, which is not ideal.

https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/hive/

Most people wanting home assistant integration seem to land on generic z-wave or ZigBee TRVs. There's several threads on it e.g.
