KLlane
Hi all i am currently doing a self build and painting all the skirting and architrave myself. i bought polyfilla decorators caulk as was always told to get a decent one as opposed to the likes of screw fix version and applied to all areas needed ( I was generous in application ) and then have done 2 coats of mdf primer ... does anyone know if these cracks will disappear when I apply my finish coats / gloss ? any thoughts or help welcome . thank you
markc
Hi, couple of points: definitely doesn’t look like MDF. have you used the caulk to form a fillet at the corners as you would silicon sealer? what primer did you use? was it bare wood or previously painted? the paint looks very thick, primers are designed to get hold of the surface so thick applications can affect anything underneath. KLlane
It's def mdf I used the painters caulk to cover where the architrave met the full door stop and where the hockey stick was fitted to architrave... I used a layland mdf primer it was not previously painted
Roundtuit
It's difficult to tell exactly what we're looking at. Is the second pic a bit of quadrant in a corner? Anyhow, I'd give the mdf a good rub down with some fine sandpaper and another coat of paint, then caulk it again. I don't think you can rely on paint filling those gaps I'm afraid. Oh, and caulk after you've primed, not before. Edited November 16, 2021 by Roundtuit typo
tonyshouse
I would leave it a year then do it, too much drying out and settling down to get it all perfect til then
Polish Builder
I can see you applied to much caulk. Max should be 2-3mm. 4-5mm always ruins everything. Fill cracks with paint. It helps in most cases.
