  1. Hi All! Just signed up to BuildHub as we are in the early phases of our self build project and thought it would be good to talk to other self builders and join the community. To provide a bit of context I am looking to do a self-build with my partner, we are both living at home with my parents to save up enough money which we have now, but we are both first time buyers. We are looking to build a flat pack/kit home and are currently searching for land in Bristol. We have identified plots of land and have had them assessed at a high level by the kit house companies, planning consultants and architects (and carried out our own assessments) to ascertain whether the plot is feasible to build on. We have just sent letters to the land owners expressing our interest in purchasing so fingers crossed someone comes back saying they are interested in selling! They are mainly large garden plots. The main thing that we are probably looking for support, advice and guidance on, is searching for and securing land, so if anyone has some tips and tricks, please get in touch! Thanks Ajit
  2. Hi everybody I am renovating a house in London and found this wonderful, stylish, Italian staircase. Made by Fontanot an Italian firm. I bought the staicase. The price was very reasoanable (under £4,000) for two stories, but it is proving very difficult to install. Fontanot says that it can easily be fitted by a DIY specialist, but the buildres working on the site have not managed to figure it ou, inspite of instructions and videos. The company which sold it to me just insist it's easy to install and gave tme the name of one installer, right up north who is busy for two weeks Surely there is somebody out there who can install it? I have a budget of £1,800 so please contact me if you know of anybody who can do it. I have instructions and videos Thanks everybody staircase.details.pdf staircase...pdf
  3. Anyone have experience of buying Solar Pv in kit form, for in-roof installation?
  4. Hi, New member from Swindon here. Many thanks for granting me access to the forum. I'm likely to pay off the mortgage on my current property in North Swindon this year and have some additional cash behind me. My wife and I are looking to step up to a bigger property in the region but the quality and value of new developments by speculative builders hasn't inspired us a great deal (e.g. - 400k for a property with nowhere to store an ironing board and a garden you couldn't swing a cat in). Perhaps a little unimaginatively, my wife and I like the idea of kit designs rather than a bespoke bricks and mortar development. I'm keen to learn more about the basics: costing, project planning, legal aspects, land acquisition (including local council provision for self build) - as well as hearing recommendations regarding kit home manufacturers (timber frame). If you've gone through the kit build process and have experiences or a blog to share, I'm keen to hear. Although there are few benefits to living in Swindon, we do have the National Self-Build and Renovation Centre! p.s. - will do my best to use the search function to look for answers.
