What insulation is best?

May Thanks everyone for your advice. Greatly appreciated in an area I know nothing about. Arnold9801

Many thanks.

I'm due to start fitting the ducting to the roof vents installed by the roofers on our new build for the bathroom and another for the en suite. The run from the vents to the showers is approx 15 feet. I'm concerned that if I fit flexible ducting it will develop sagging and with condensation, be a trap for water to build up. As its up in the attic the long term effect of this (as we won't be going up there very often) concerns me. Could anyone advise me whether I'm being overly concerned or would it be best to avoid flexi ducting and install rigid ducting instead? Any other advice would be appreciated. Thank you. Arnold9801

I’ve just completed the upstairs stud-partitioning for our new build. I’m going to line them with 18mm OSB before plaster boards. Can anyone advise me on whether I need to line the walls with waterproof chipboard which I’ve put down for the flooring for the whole of upstairs as opposed to the OSB? Also do I need a different plasterboard for the bathroom and en-suite and do the shower walls get lined with something else that I’m unaware of? Any advice would be appreciated. Arnold9801

I'm doing a new build and we have three vents installed in the roof for the en suites and bathroom. I'm just doing the stud partitioning at the moment and will be fitting the foil over the rafters soon to finish off the inside of the roof. Subsequently I need to deal with these vents and the piping that runs from them down to the ceilings of the rooms they're there for. My question relates to what type of ventilation ducting is required on these? Is it the flexible plastic ducting approx 100mm diameter or is it something else?

Sorry... Yes I meant "isn't!"

Thank you. This really helped me verify that using battens to fix it is the only option!
-
I forgot to ask, exactly what stapler did you use? Regards
-
Many thanks for your reply. A very good point which I didn't think about. If you could send a pic that would be great. Regards Arnold9801

For those that have fitted this, what staples did you find best? I have a Stanley/Arrow stapler but felt those staples maybe to light weight. As our build is a dorma, there will be counterbattens nailed on the H Control foil below the ceiling rafters. However my concern is the area covered by the foil above the rafters up to the ridge. This won't require battens as there won't be plasterboards fitted on top of the foil. So without battening, I was wondering if these staples would be adequate? I guess some may suggest about counter battening up there as well. However with it being such a large roof and the price of timber I'm hoping I can get away with counter battening the foil above ceiling level.

Cutting Actis Hybris!!
Arnold9801 replied to Arnold9801's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
The rafters with varying widths is a real pain. I know what you mean. Another problem is that if its to tight it fails to expand properly! -
Omg.... I've just started insulating the roof of our new build with Actis Hybris insulation and what a horrid material to cut! I'm using 140mm and am interested in techniques that worked for you to cut it. I've modified a saw which isn't bad but still drifts quite a lot. I've tried a multitool and reciprocating saw with a high tpi to no avail as the drift is even worse. I'm going to try a rotary cutter(manual) in the hope it will be an improvement. Please let me know how you managed. Regards

It's the expandable honeycomb. I'm thinking of making one from an old saw.

My large delivery of Actis Hybris is being delivered on Saturday and I'm trying to no avail to locate the correct saw to cut it. Can anyone advise me on where they're available as they seem ever so scarce? Regards

I need quite a lot with 100 x8ft x 2ft boards to lay. Would there be much difference if I use normal white pva wood adhesive instead of a D4? The reason I ask is due to availability and need to buy 25litres which I will have to mail order!

I use my Screwfix/Toolstation most times for my fixings but where else is recommended as I want to buy screws in bulk? Arnold9801

Many Thanks for your replies.

I'm just about to lay my green chipboard t&g flooring on top of the beams. I'll screw them down but which adhesive is best to use on the joints? Arnold9801

I got a lot of stud partition walls to make upstairs on our new build. After erecting the 4x2 frames I am thinking of boarding them with 11mm sob as I don’t like placing plaster boards direct on the studs. Would you say that 11mm is a suitable thickness? I would like to go next thickness up but due to the amount I require and the current prices I feel 11mm is a suitable option. Arnold9801

11mm osb in West Cornwall currently £19.75 + vat and that's for an order of 40!

Thanks for your replies. Where can you get the flexi saw blade from?

I’d be interested to know if anyone has done their own ceiling spray foam insulation? We are currently doing a large dorma new build. The roofers haven’t long finished the slating and the scaffolding came down today. The fitting of the windows is next but I’m thinking of spray foam insulation on the underside of the roof between the rafters myselfI’ve just watched some YouTube’s on spray foaming yourself and as I’m doing most of the build I’m considering doing this as well as opposed to getting a team in to do it. Ive seen that the materials are readily available for it here in the UK. Would appreciate your advice. Arnold9801
