I would originally said solenoid on oil pump starting to fail but when you said removal of front cover makes difference, I presume this is not a room sealed boiler I think I would be double checking baffles are in correct place. I figure that if we can at least see out the cold spell albeit with partially dressed boiler, that's fine by me. Beyond that, we will certainly need to get to the bottom of what is going on.
