saveasteading Posted October 30 Posted October 30 I think that's OK. A joist has very little stress towards the mid height. It also reduces towards the ends.
moe Posted October 31 Author Posted October 31 Hi all, hope everyone’s doing good! 👋 Just thought I’d give you all a quick update — I’ve doubled up the trimmer section by the stairs for extra reinforcement, and I’m planning to add a side joist hanger for extra support, highlight in green (fingers crossed I’ve done it right 😅). The red section in the pic will be triple-joisted (7x9 inch) — one end going into the wall and the other sitting on a joist hanger. Hopefully I’m on the right track here too 😳😂👍🏻 Stay safe everyone, and stay blessed! 🦸🏻♂️
moe Posted Thursday at 17:36 Author Posted Thursday at 17:36 I have a quick question: if I intend to insert a m12 threaded bar into a hole in order to secure it with a nut and washer on both sides, what should be the diameter of the hole?
Redbeard Posted Thursday at 17:39 Posted Thursday at 17:39 12mm. I sometimes grind a slight point on hte cut stud to help get the nut on and to start the stud in the friction-fit (or threaded-fit) hole. If you are bolting an end on a joist you don't want 'slop'.
saveasteading Posted Thursday at 18:52 Posted Thursday at 18:52 12mm indeed. The rod will probably be undersized a tad anyway. If you need to tap it through then fit a nut first, or maybe two, so that you hammer the nut and not the rod. Otherwise you damage the thread and will take ages to get it on. If you put the washer on first then that also saves undoing the nut..... but that's what I always forget.
