SteamyTea Posted April 12 Posted April 12 Well worth listening to this. Answers a lot of misconceptions about cement and concrete. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0029rqw 1
JohnMo Posted April 12 Posted April 12 Still listening. Interesting the base material is lime for cement. The production of lime produces bucket loads of CO2 just because the chemical reaction causes it. Plus the heat input. So not that sure the environmentalists are correct saying I'm using lime because it's better for the environment.
Mattg4321 Posted April 12 Posted April 12 Someone better get on the blower to the Chinese. I read that they poured more concrete in 2 years than the US has in its entire history. They burn 30% more coal than the rest of the world combined. And rising. They’re also taking significant control of worldwide raw material supply. Meanwhile we do our best to impoverish ourselves whilst fiddling round the edges, whilst the BBC preach to us that we’re the ones doing all the damage (now and in the past), whilst doing nothing to rein in their extravagances. If you can find a cheaper or better way of doing something, then it will see widespread takeup. At the moment there is little serious alternative to concrete on a global level

Basically what I found out when I did my bit of here about it. Lime does absorb some CO2 as the curing takes place, but not sure how much. 39 minutes ago, JohnMo said: not that sure the environmentalists are correct saying I'm using lime because it's better for the environment There are environmentalists and environmentalists. Was interesting spending a year at university with a group of them and seeing where the priorities lay. It is a bit like climate change and politicians, unless the effects are immediate, then it can be ignored. 43 minutes ago, JohnMo said: Still listening Got to the timber building bit yet?
