Rusty Bearing Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Hi all. After retiring we thought we'd like to make one more move back down to Somerset/Gloucestershire area. Trouble is we can't find anything we like enought to pay the costs plus taxes so........ We once, long while back, talked about the idea of self build in Scotland but that would be too far to travel to Francewhich we do regularly. Recently binned the idea of moving there as it became a bit complex legally and financialy. The idea has resurfaced on the grounds that what we built would be cost and tax and energy efficient. I have the advantage that I spent many years in the building trade as a joiner though bricklaying, plastering etc present no issue for me. Muy only problem is getting older, takes me longer to do stuff than it used to these days Hoping to pick up some tips on finding plots, planning etc ππ 1

Was listed under purple bricks, but not in any sections you would normally find a plot, was miss allocated within purple bricks and no-one could find it. Β We also did weekend drive abouts. Went down all side roads, found lots of sites privately advertised, you never find any other way. Β Leg work is needed.
Rusty Bearing Posted January 26 Author Posted January 26 Thanks, I think we need some week long breaks in the areas we are looking at then. I'll have a word with friends in the West Country to keep an eye out - I'm originally from that neck of the woods. We cycle a lot which is probably a good way to look around.
SteamyTea Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Welcome. Β Have you considered buying an app costing house, on a plot you like, then knock down and rebuild. Β I think most on here would not claim that it is cheaper to self build. That does depend on the plot a lot i.e. services, surveys, restrictions. Β I always think of Gloucestershire as the Midlands, but then I am in the proper west country.
Rusty Bearing Posted January 27 Author Posted January 27 Nothing's off the cards at this stage, either knock it down or keep one facade. You'd pay stamp duty on land with a property on it I imagine but offset would be the fact that services were already there. Β I'm Somerset born and raisedΒ and while they'm generally friendly up here in the north they do talk funny π
