Has anyone had experience of this?

I know I have the right to modify my property and the ability to do what is 'reasonable' but if the neighbours property is a source of income do they have any right to refuse or make demands based on their possible loss of income?

Any advice on how to approach to minimise any conflict?

That is a good appoach keep things low key and friendly if you can.

I'll make no further comment as no expert on PWA if you are in England. If in Scotland then I know a bit more. Will be interestng to see what other folk think.

That is it really. don't hammer through the night, radio not blasting. etc.

you could put a note on the door. I'm BonaVista working on building work   next door  8 til 5  x mon to sat. ...... let me know if you need particular quiet through the day and I'll see what I can do.

photo of that  and you are legally clear Id think.

Rent it whilst you carry out the work... Vacate it once finish! Tidy up as you go along..... 😁

Yes, did consider this but obviously adding the unnecessary cost of renting a 5 bedroom house in the city center would be last resort.

Although demolising kitchen and bathroom at the same time so perhaps renting it on just the worst days for a shower, home cooked meal and a dust free sleep without having to go to the gym or my mothers would be a blessing!

We have had no contact from them since they bought it so I dont know who I'm addressing any correspondance to and there is no guarantee I can catch them to talk to. It is a Malaysian family that have multiple properties in the area from what I can see on AirBnB, they don't live it in when its vacant.
