Lincolnshire Ian Posted September 15, 2024 Posted September 15, 2024 Hi everyone I'm shopping around for self-build insurance. Buildstore Insurance, Self-build Zone, and Protek are currently on my list. When I fill in the online quote form, I notice that the forms for Buildstore Insurance and Self-build Zone seem to be identical. Are these two "brands" part of the same company, and if so, has anyone got different quotes from each? Or are they different companies just using the same web designer? Finally, does anyone else have a suggestion for any other self-build insurers? We are demolishing an old prefab bungalow and building a new house. Thanks Ian
MG-Wales Posted September 17, 2024 Posted September 17, 2024 I think they are the same broker in the insurance market. The company address is also the same. We had the quote from Buildstore automatically as we mortgage through them. I then requested a quote from Self Build Zone and the policy they suggested and the price was different. Also enquired Protek and Proaktive (Aviva) at the time but ended up buying from Selfbuild.uk.com which is backed by Zurich. Quoted prices for 18 months were between £1400 and £2300, with Selfbuild.uk.com at the lower end and Buildstore at the higher, all the others in between. I've also just discussed the renewal with Selfbuild.uk.com and the renewal price seems fair, so I will renew with them for another 9 months.
MikeSharp01 Posted September 17, 2024 Posted September 17, 2024 Yes its a mine field - we just renewed ours for 12 months and it was in the ball park of a grand! (We are at 2nd fix now so they tell me there is more to insure at this stage, which I suppose is true!)
Lincolnshire Ian Posted September 18, 2024 Author Posted September 18, 2024 Thanks everyone. As a benchmark (this might be cheap/expensive, no idea). We landed on Protek, it cost us just over £1500 for rebuild value of £475000, cover for hired plant and equipment and a storage shed.

kandgmitchell Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 We paid Protek £1400 or so for £400,000 cover last year so you're not far off the market.
