I have 4kw of panels on the roof, and would like to get a diverter fitted. I rang joules who frowned on it and wouldn't advise how to fit it as their system is all preconfigured and predesigned etc etc.. Has anyone installed one on a joules packaged kit? JamesPa Posted July 28, 2023 Share Posted July 28, 2023 Most like likely the ashp controls and feeds the immersion and if so you may not be able to wire the feed from the diverter in parallel and joules won't get involved. You would likely need a relay so that the output stages of the diverter and ashp are isolated. I've seen a claim that the o/p from one diverter is DC in which case there definitely needs to be isolation (and care, DC can be nasty at moderate voltages because there are no zero crossings to extinguish arcs). Somebody on here has probably done it and if so can advise. Alternatively scrap the diverter and schedule the ashp to hear water around midday when PV is likely to be highest. You will benefit from the ashp cop, albeit offset by the fact you can't guarantee to hit sunny periods. Many on here say that's the best strategy but I don't know if anyone has modelled it. If you have a battery it's very likely a win to use the ashp. If you have cheap rate overnight and paid export (even without the battery), it's very likley better to use ASHP overnight for HW and let the solar go to export. (I buy electricity for 5p overnight and sell PV for 15p in the day, and one night time DHW charge lasts us all day, so it makes zero sense to use the daytime PV on DHW, whether via heat pump or otherwise). If neither, then yeah more complex modelling needed. I actually have both the above, so it's a no-brainer. The PV divert now goes unused. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
