Timber post attached to staircase

Hi,

I’m just after thoughts as to whether the timber post pictured in the attached photo would have been installed for any structural reason?

We live in a Victorian terraced house  where the original handrail and bannisters for the stairs had been replaced in the 60s/70s with timber post horizontal ranch-style handrail and banister features. We’ve since replaced these and reinstated the wall on the ground floor after when we did a loft conversion.

The timber post is not original and is made up of 4 separate pieces of wood glued together and covered in wallpaper.

We obviously want to remove it but don’t know if it’s safe to do so.

Thanks
