MPatz Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 Hi, I’m just after thoughts as to whether the timber post pictured in the attached photo would have been installed for any structural reason? We live in a Victorian terraced house where the original handrail and bannisters for the stairs had been replaced in the 60s/70s with timber post horizontal ranch-style handrail and banister features. We’ve since replaced these and reinstated the wall on the ground floor after when we did a loft conversion. The timber post is not original and is made up of 4 separate pieces of wood glued together and covered in wallpaper. We obviously want to remove it but don’t know if it’s safe to do so. Thanks
markc Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 What’s above it? Looks like newel post for top of stairs
Mr Punter Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 These sometimes support the upstairs landing. Have a look at a neighbours and see what theirs is like.
johnhenstock83 Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 I can see a little there, at the base of it. check what's underneath. regardless of what's above, unless something solid is holding up, it can't be too "structural", two floorboards won't take any significant concentrated load.
