Timber for suspended ceiling

I'm putting up a suspended ceiling, which will be covered in PB. Ceiling is 3.5m x 2.5m. I have a load of 2x1 battens left over, would they be strong enough to use or would they have too much flex to support PB and skim? Or should I go the whole hog using mini joist hangers and 3x2 instead?
