When to start worrying ?

This seems an all to common problem.  I have got rid of the contractor for my build after multiple errors/issues. On confrontation it was everyone else's fault but his and he accepted no responsibility for anything.  He even accused me of checking too much on my own house build!  He suggested walking off the job to which I agreed and then he had the cheek to ask to be paid.  That was some 8 weeks ago and I am still working out the issues he has left behind.
