I've removed our old washing machine that gave up the ghost. Tried to fix it but too expensive. And also our dishwasher that was next to it, as we just don't use it. 

There's always been a bit of an occasional drain/fart smell that we could never work out where it was coming from. I figured it was the washing machine or dishwasher. 

I'm no plumber or DIY expert but this doesn't look right to me. 

Wait, you removed your dishwasher? Not wanting to start an argument or tell you how to wash up but they really are much better at using precious water compared to doing it by hand. And they free up that time to do something else.

 

With regard to your standpipe, yeah that's a right fudge... You need a trap to keep the smells at bay.

Fit a 45⁰ bend at the tee and a  U bend appliance trap above it. £10. 10mins. Sorted.
