July 27, 20215 yr Hi, I'm looking for some advice on how to make a VAT reclaim in the following situation and any advice would be much appreciated. With the rapidly changing material prices my builder is struggling to figure out a price for the next stage of the build and has instead suggested a time and materials pricing basis, with an agreed budget for labour charges, that would then allow me to recover the VAT on all materials he uses and save money. Sounds a good idea and this is a new build so valid for VAT recovery. From what I understand of the process I can make a single claim at the end on submission of all the valid receipts. A key requirement, I believe, is that all VAT receipts are only valid if issued in my name - i.e. I have to make the the purchase. So how can I recover VAT on materials my builder will purchase and use? These will most likely be sourced from his regular builders merchant but under his regular supply account? Is there a way he can invoice me for materials used on a consolidated invoice, tied to delivery notes if required, that I could then use as the basis for VAT reclaim? Any advice much appreciated.
July 27, 20215 yr The easiest way will be to set up an account at several Builders Merchants In your name and give him access to the account The BM will then bill you each month with the build address or your home and your name on the invoice You may find like us that some invoices fro eBay and elsewhere don’t have your name on Just your address Thats ok also The arrangement that you have entered into will be one that most self builders with main contractors will have to adopt Or risk loosing the builder It seems impossible to product material prices at the moment

Depends on his VAT status. I would think that if he provides you with a VAT invoice, with his VAT number, for materials only then this would be the same as buying from another VAT registered business. Time can be separately invoiced and zero rated.
