Jilly
Hello, On your very wise advice, I have asked for a Willis heater for my UFH to be used until I can afford ASHP/Solar etc. My builder's quantity surveyor is trying to price for the quote and says the only ones she can find need to be connected to cold water storage and have a main hot water cylinder. Is this correct? We are very tight on space, and have no room for a cold water tank. Also I was going to have an immersion heater but would a twin coil be better as future proof? It's a PITA not speaking to a plumber and going through the builder's QS. Please can you recommend makes as she wants exact spec for pricing? The first plumber gave eyewatering quotes for everything I can't afford ?
PeterW
Buy this and hand it to him .. https://heatingpartswarehouse.co.uk/product/willis-external-immersion-heater/ Then make sure he puts one of these in ... https://heatingpartswarehouse.co.uk/product/reflex-12lt-heating-vessel-8203300/ Then he needs to put one of these in, to fill the loop... https://heatingpartswarehouse.co.uk/product/altecnic-wras-15mm-filling-loop-kit/ That’s less than £100 of bits, and a couple of hours and some nice bits of copper to install it. Does the UFH have a pump built in ..?
Jilly
The UFH hasn't been installed yet, the builder is trying to spec every last teeny item (its driving me mad!)
PeterW
Ok ... Area ..?? Is the pipe in..? Or the number of loops..?? Pumpset and Manifold here https://www.wundatrade.co.uk/shop/home/underfloor-heating-manifolds-and-pump-sets/premium-pumpsets/premium-pumpset-wilo-erp-pump/ https://www.wundatrade.co.uk/shop/home/quick-shop/wundatherm-quick-shop/manifolds-quickshop/4-port-premium-underfloor-heating-manifold-2/ None of this is rocket science and I would ask the plumber how many he has installed before ...
Jilly
The problem is the QS is a trainee employed by the builder to generate quotes (makes sense cos we all know how builders hate quoting) but it's like Chinese whispers as she isn't a plumber and the plumber wants to sell more and so we go round in a circle. I'd intended to employ subbies myself but have got stuck with this and I guess they want to shield how much profit they are making.
PeterW
Sorry meant floor area ..!! and nothing wrong with you providing parts with a 10% handling charge
Jilly
The building is 6 x 10m externally so a bit less than that.
PeterW
That is about 350m of pipe so max 4 loops / zones based on 150mm spacing
Jilly
Their plumber recommended 100mm spacing, also we would like a small later (30m2) and another the same later (if we are allowed!), is it worth putting a bigger manifold in now? Thank you!
PeterW
100mm is very close - how good is your insulation ..??
Jilly
I'm trying to get 100mm graphite EPS in or wood fibre boards to use with the lithotherm tiles if the u value is sufficient.
PeterW
100mm insulation would need to be PIR to meet regs.
