Flagstones - what's the best bedding option?

Hi all, I'm going to be laying flagstones (600mm x 200mm x 50mm) and I'm wondering what's the best method of bedding them down?

 

Just screed the fine sand and lay them on that? Screed and whack the sand and then lay them on a lean sand and cement mix? Bed them down with a regular mortar mix?

 

Or what would you recommend?

Laid on a screed is fine for paths and patios 

A full bed of mortar is the heavy duty option 

Don’t forget to paint the back of the flag with SBR. (Frost)
