Like the title suggests I’ve been an avid scroller looking over years of content to help push me in the right direction but think it’s time to sign up and ask for advise from you guys. I’ve finally achieved a breakthrough in my planning application and in the final stage of building reg drawings. My advise is going to be on a self build I hope to get underway in March with weather depending. I’ve gone the icf route as I’m building it in to a bank. I was going to have a 1st floor in sips but they’ve come back with a silly price and don’t want to get involved in the 1st floor contraction/ detailing so I thought stick with the icf by nudura. It’s a flat roof construction as I will be having a wild flower roof and solar panels so my neighbours continue to enjoy their view. I’m sure I’ll post questions along the way but being in the building game for a wee while I know enough to construct most things myself but I’m at a loss at the minute when it comes to windows. I’m not building passive by any means but the roof and floor will come in at 0.12U and I’m told the icf will be 0.16. I’ve probably got 35m2 of north facing windows. I’ve had a quote for internorm as I love the Juliet balconies they do but was wondering if you guys think I need to go as deep into passive house windows as they are. Is there possibly other manufacturers that would be cheaper but almost achieve what internorm offer and do I need these low arse figures. I do want as e o friendly house as possible. I have looked at so many. Most of the windows I’m having are sealed units. Apart from 5 doors. I’m just not sure if I want to spend £30gs plus on windows living in the garden of England. Oh really. How did you get on with it. I’m dealing with a guy called Chris oram at the minute. There trying to get me on a training course at the end of the month to aid me in the build. I’d just prefer to understand the benefits from fitting awesome windows. Never delved in to the world of triple glazing and the most expensive anything window related I’ve bought was a couple sets of bifolds and they only come in to there own in the summer time. So I guess I know what I’m getting with nudura and concrete etc but I’m not overly sure about necessarily needing windows made for -30 degree climate. Chris is a lovely guy. Russell griffiths Posted January 17, 2021 Share Posted January 17, 2021 Your figures might be a bit out on the windows, if you have a hunt for a few topics on windows people list there cost per m, on an average it comes out about £500 per m. It is one item I bought that came in under budget. If you’ve been involved in the building game then ask Chris to get you on a few sites, you will learn loads in an hour just wondering about, the course needs doing but isn’t as good as it should be. find some lads doing a house and volunteer to do a days labouring for free, then go to a pour day, you will learn loads and it will get you thinking on how to do yours. Please do tell. that’s what he’s trying to do but with the dreaded covid he’s struggling a little and it doesn’t seem to be all the craze at the minute in the southeast. I’ve been trawling for as much info as possible. I do think they will come down in price if I’m honest as I’m going to lose the lift and slides which will hopefully bring most of the 7grand installation cost down. Please don’t say bi folds as I will need to give you a swift kick in the nadgers if we ever meet. I paid £2000 for them to fit the door and gable windows, I needed them to do this as the door weighed 250kg and the gable window not a lot less, all the smaller ones you can do yourself. I’d prefer a back door as we have little dogs who are always in and out. Cool that would be great thanks..
