Helen Vowls
Hi, A bit of advice please. We are just sat comparing two quotes, one from Fleming and one from Scandia Hus. The plan is to get the timber frame supplied, erected and to watertight. SH do first fix but Flemings don’t so if I take the first fix price off SH quote there is still a significant different in price. Is anyone aware of a difference in the quality of their frame / workmanship? thanks Helen
Declan52
Have you made sure that both are quoting for the same things. Is scaffolding and crane hire included in each for example?? Is the frame for both the same depth?? Who are they using for Windows, one could be cheap crap and the other Rolls Royce?? Insulation and membrane both included??? There could be lots and lots of differences in the quotes.
Helen Vowls
This is the problem - quotes seem very vague and trying to get clarity is like digging for gold! thanks for the advice - all fair points

NSS
Hi @Helen Vowls We have a Scandia Hus timber frame (erected five years ago). At the time, their quote was accompanied by a very comprehensive list of what was included. We chose to omit windows, MVHR and staircase, but our package included (for example) all of the insulation (external walls, roof, internal walls and ceilings), all of the stud wall timber, plasterboard and internal battens, the t&g chipboard flooring for the first floor, the roof sarking boards, battens and roof membrane, crane and telehandler hire, even all of the fixings for most of the above. We were very happy with the service provided by Scandia Hus and, whilst I have no doubt there are less expensive suppliers, we felt safe using them - not least because they offered an ESCROW arrangement for payments. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. They are the obvious ones to use - are 30 mins from where the land is, really like the chap there as he’s not salesly (Darren) and lots of other reasons. I’m just trying to work out if there are significantly more expensive than others. If, for instance, the difference pays for an amazing kitchen then we will need to take a view but if it isn’t significant then we’d use them as i agree - we feel safe with them and they’d pretty much look after everything for us! great to hear a success story though, thank you! Would love to see any pics if you have them! Hi Helen, I think we were probably a slightly unusual client for Scandia Hus. I'd designed the house as none of their 'standard' designs met our need. The house was totally designed around my wife's needs (due to health, stature and mobility issues) and it was for these reasons in part that we didn't use SH's preferred window and MVHR partners. They were very supportive and great at turning my vision into working drawings. They also suggested some minor but worthwhile amendments (that I'd probably never have thought of) which we really appreciated. By comparison to most Scandia Hus properties it's also fairly modest in size (165m2 chalet bungalow) so I'm not sure how relevant it would be to your project, but I'll see if I can dig out a few photos. Edited to add: We only contracted SH to supply and erect the timber frame. Groundworks and all work beyond the erection of the timber frame was managed by me, calling in specialist trades as needed, but also doing a fair amount of the work myself. I know SH has started offering a 'turnkey' package more recently. Edited November 22, 2020 by NSS
NSS
This is a pic of the rear elevation, albeit taken over two years ago when we were still landscaping.
