I need to retain the mud/soil. Eventually we need to create some kind of patio/veranda/decking in front of the annexe.

Hi guys, I need to create a retaining wall in front of our new annexe. The garden is on a slight slope. Once this is done we're looking at creating a decking area or slab/patio area depending on cost. I'm no builder but don't mind getting my hands mucky. Can anyone give me some simple advice or guidelines on how to achieve this simply please? Cheers P.S. Path in the photo is just a temporary one to gain access.

I shouldn't laugh! ? It's exactly the type of thing I would do.

Thanks. So it still kicks up quite a bit of dust even though it's got a bag?

Hi, We're currently decorating and plan to re sand our bedroom. Floorboards have been sanded a long time a go but they're a bit knackered now so need re doing. My question is, which order do you do it. Sand, cover, paint room, varnish? Or, paint room, sand, varnish. Cheers

Fireplace removed. How to fill?
Invader75 replied to Invader75's topic in Stoves, Fires & Fireplaces
Would it not be easier for me to fill with glass fibre insulation, board over and have an air vent. Easier for anyone to reinstate if required. As discussed, it won't be on show or used as such as the wardrobe back board will also be covering it. Just thinking of being able to do it very quickly and not having to deal with blocks and cement. -

Thanks mate. Great advice. -
Hi guys, I've removed the old fireplace in our front bedroom. It's going to be covered anyway as we're having full width fitted wardrobes. What would be the easiest fixture to fill and cover the hole give then fact that the wardrobes will have a back so it will be covered. I was thinking insulation, plaster board and a vent? Also, what about the base/bottom? Cheers

Thanks. I think I've sourced some free pallets so hopefully get those laid.

Thanks guys, great advice. I was initially thinking of pallets laid on the grass levelled as much as poss, then boards on top.

Hi all, I need a temporary wheelchair friendly path solution. We've had an annexe built in the bottom of our garden and as groundworks have been in the garden and old existing path have been removed. It's a bit of a mud bath and has a slight slope leading to the annexe. Until the landscapers we're using come in (April) I need to put something temporary in so my father can gain access in his wheelchair. Any cheap easy suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

As an alternative to using planters, I've seen some use root barriers like this. https://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/how-to-stop-bamboos-roots-from

Thanks guys. Some great advice. Initially we were thinking of planters. The section we we're looking at runs behind the annexe we're building so there's that to consider. The back of the annexe doesn't have any windows so it won't suffer from any light blocking. It's more to create some screening from neighbours for us as we look out to down the garden. We'd like evergreen as we already have Acia's, large silver birch and large copper beach that shed.

I was looking at these but it could prove expensive https://www.loftleg.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxtPsxMj83gIVBJ3VCh1QHQWvEAAYAiAAEgLhD_D_BwE

Thanks. I'm not expert on these matters. ? How do you mean and what should I be looking for?

Hi, We've had extra loft insulation put down in our attic which obviously has raised it up above the joists. I wanted to board over the joists but understand I'd have to use loft legs which will cost and also only good for storage. Can anyone tell me if, rather than have the extra insulation on the floor of the attic can I remove and have it on the ceiling between roof rafters? Then board the floor as normal with tongue and groove. Many thanks

Hi, Does anyone have any tips on creating some bamboo or other green screening to run the full length of a wall (9metres). I understand bamboo roots are very aggressive but also grows quickly and quite attractive. Many thanks

Apologies if it's already been covered on one of the sections in here but are there any recommended companies or self builders doing a similar small annexe?

It's not going to be an extension, it'll be a free standing dwelling. I've been looking at these guys for example. https://www.zedbox.co.uk

Hi, I'm looking to build a timber frame annexe on a plot in our rear garden. I don't mind using pre fab companies as long as the look is right. It would be single story open plan one bedroom with wet room approx 8.5 x 4m. Has anyone got approx prices that something like this might cost? Just to get a general feel of whether it's worth paying a local architect and builder to create it or buy "off the peg" as it were. Many thanks

Hi, I'm looking for some timber frame prefab companies in Wales/Bristol area. Would anyone have any recommendations? Cheers

thought as much. It's my first experience of using tree surgeons and wanted to make sure it was competitive but more importantly, knowledgable as it's not really a straightforward job dealing with the old dear.

Cheers @PeterW So, steps are. 1. Decide on building design/supplier 2. Get plans 3. Go and see the old lady with cakes/tea/sherry 4. Deal with hedges/Leylandi 5. Get planning Do you think the price our TS quoted is about right? In fairness, he's been in the business 17yrs and extremely efficient when dealing with our request.
