Can you explain why you think they're wrong? I've seen several jobs, even new builds, where surfaces appear uneven or show imperfections under certain lighting. Renderers have told me they aim for flatness, but there are always some system limitations. I’ve considered roughcast silicone render, though I’m unsure if it would help. It can look heavily textured or even dated, which might not suit the aesthetic I’m going for. I'd be open to a larger grain render if it would make a noticeable difference.

Hi all, I’m currently renovating a 1920s house, and my architect has specified a silicone render for the exterior. However, after speaking with a few rendering companies, I’ve been advised that larger wall areas could appear uneven when viewed under certain lighting conditions, such as direct sunlight. I’ve decided against using external wall insulation (EWI) due to the extent of modifications it would require. Are there any alternative rendering systems, textures, or finishing techniques that could help minimise the risk of visible unevenness—especially on large surfaces? I’m open to suggestions involving newer materials or coatings as well. Thanks in advance!

Thanks Craig, this is helpful, I’ll look into Compriband. The challenge is finding a company who’ll use those materials/methods, they all seem to want to do it their way, which usually is the cheapest and quickest way for them. Or suppliers are using subcontractors for installation and have very little say in what installation methods those subs use.

Hi, I’m shopping around for flush casement windows and have received mixed opinions on the best way to finish around the external parts of windows to fill the gap between the window and brick work. some installers prefer using a neat bead of silicone, however, some have argued that it discolours and crumbles over time. Those that have, insist on using plastic trims. Whats the best solution here to achieve the neatest look without impacting the look of the window? many thanks

Was this the 70mm profile or the 80mm resurgence range?

Thanks i’ll look into them.

Thanks for the helpful answer.

Most timberlook windows such as Residence are typically installed with window cill horns to make them look more authentic, especially if they are fitted with a Radlington cill on an older property. Having horns isn’t a problem - I was seeking advice on the best way to finish them. There are too many window companies out there that cut corners unfortunately, and they want to do the very least / easiest install for the most pay.

Currently gathering quotes for new windows from a number of window companies. Some prefer to silicone around the horns of a window cill and some prefer to cut into the brick and mortar around the horns. Those that like to silicone argue that cutting into the brick looks messy, others argue that silicone discolours and cracks. which of these is the best way to do this?

I’ve been quoted £17.5k for Residence 7, 11 windows, 1 bay and 1 french door inc. installation. About £15.6k for Timberlook. Are these quotes about right? They seem quite high for upvc windows.

Did you buy these in the end? How’s their quality? Have you experienced any issues with them? I am considering timberlook vs Residence 7

Looks great, good price and spec. I’ll definitely look into them.

£3k-3.5k inc. installation and a sidelight. Thanks, is Norrsken a wooden / composite door? Kind of concerned about the maintenance requirements for a wooden door. Currently, looking at Apeer, although the paint work and finish on their traditional doors seem better than the contemporary stuff - maybe it’s the panels they use, and local retailers want £3 to £4k.

A company called Entrance CDS in Nottingham do smooth finish doors. Comp door now also does smooth skins on a selected number of designs. Does anyone know of any manufacturers who also make the frames for their doors? Many of them buy in the frames so i’ve been told that the colour and texture is never an exact match and is visible more on some colours, for that reason most retailers recommend a white frame.

Hi All, I am looking for a new front door for a new entrance that's been built and wondering if anyone has any recommendations for companies / manufacturers - opening size is 2120 H, 1400 W, 1920's house, so I am not looking for something ultra modern, or not too traditional. Ideally, I would like a metre door with 400 sidelight to the left, and for access purposes, ideally a lever handle on both sides. budget of around £3 to 3.5K with fitting, could stretch a little further for the right door. I chose a Solar Calibre Craftsman door, however, the company supplying it withdrew from the contract as they were experiencing too many quality issues with them. That was an engineered wooden door with a alu-clad frame, double rebated. I've looked at composite double rebated doors of a around 70mm depth, for example Apeer, but the finishing on these doors aren't great - they are all trying to imitate wood grain, which doesn't look quite right, and most of them are two skins of GRP with a foam centre. Aluminium doors are way too modern and heavy for the property. I looked at a Kloeber Funky Front, which is a hard wood door panel and softwood frame, sprayed/coated, and single rebate, however, I haven't seen many reviews on this door and the cost of it is around £3.6K without fitting. I would need to use my own fitter as their fitting costs are very high (£900). All seems quite risky to me. I'd be open to any suggestions / recommendations. many thanks in advance.

I am being quoted between £3.8K to 4.3K depending on config e.g. glass in the panel, hardwood frame upgrade, and that's without installation. I've been quoted £200 to install by a local independent, not sure if that's a typical price or way too cheap to get a good install.

Hi All, Have any of you purchased a Kloeber Funky Front door (timber version), or any of their other doors? I would be interested in hearing some reviews/opinions on their quality, after service etc. Also interested in knowing if anyone has had one of these fitted by a independent installer and how that experience was for you? Thanks

Hi Everyone, I am selling a Internorm A410 door in Art Steel with a sidelight, which was purchased in 2021 as part of a renovation project, which was never finished due to unforseen circumstances. It's in excellent condition (please see photos attached) and has been uninstalled and stored with care. Here are the details of the door: - Size: 2180 (H), 1440 (W), with a 440 sidelight, Depth 93mm - Finish: Art Steel, Frame Ral m9005 (Matt Black), interior Traffic White - Santino white glass - Still has transport bead attached to the bottom. The door is located in Leicestershire, and I would be open to any reasonable offers. Please direct message me with any questions. Many thanks
