  1. I'm not sure if this is the correct forum so apologies if not. We are building a house in a plot next to my partner's grandmothers house. I am just looking into where all the services are in the area. I have found the mains electricity cables nearby via safedigs.com. I was just wondering if connecting to the mains is as "straight forward" (famous last words!!) as teeing off the mains cable which serves the existing house as shown in black in the attached picture? If so it seems that we would not need to involve any digging in any of the neighbours land... Any guidance would be appreciated.
  2. Thanks John, that is really very helpful. Do you know what it came in at per m2?
  3. Thanks all. No particular energy standard. Just trying to build a simple, thermally efficient family home on a tight budget - which was derived from a per square metre estimate 18 months ago which is probably no longer applicable!
  4. Hi SuperJohnG, Who/what did you use for your render board system? For our build I had originally decided on blocks and render but for some of the reasons you describe I am now considering a render board system. I have heard that some lenders are funny about "non-traditional" systems, did you have any issues? My build is in Scotland also (West Lothian) and I am currently looking for good local tradesmen. Thanks in advance, Mark
  5. Hi, First post here. I am a first time self-builder. My partner and I are just about to receive planning permission to build a 4 bedroom 1.75 storey traditional-style house on a plot in West Lothian (167m2). It will be a timber Kit - we are currently working with Claymore Timber Frames who have so far been very good. I am still ironing out a lot of the details - so looking to speak with people here to help! Thanks, Mark
