Planning approved!

Our planning application was finally approved yesterday!

When we bought the plot it already had planning on it, so our application was a variation to change the design. We submitted it in February 2026 and it was finally approved in October 2026. Annoyingly we just had a long series of stupid delays.

  • The planning officer didn't even seem to start looking at our application until May-ish.
  • Then she requested a few changes regarding window symmetry and wanted us to lower the ridge height slightly. We did that.
  • We had to send it back for another round of consultations but she gave us a new deadline of mid-July 2026.
  • That came and went with no contact from her...
  • We then learned our officer was on leave for an unknown amount of time so it was reassigned.
  • It took the new officer so long to look at it that our original one came back from leave and it got reassigned back again!

Glad this process is finally over.

Next step for us will be to sell our house to fund the build and move into a rental property. At this point we'll be waiting until after Christmas to kick that off.

We had something similar, and then we were into 2020 and all the delays that introduced !!

We smile now, and there have been other hurdles thrown in our way.

Things will proceed and all will be good. Stay patient, stay positive.

Bit of a me too thing going on here!  Our PO went on long term sick a week after we were allocated to her.  No one told us anything and it was very hard to get any info at all when we started trying to find out after the decision date came and went.  Our case wasn't allocated to anyone else for another 6 months until I got the Councillors responsible for planning involved.  It seems many Planning Depts are under staffed and over worked so the pressure is on and many go sick as a result making it worse.  Given the stated objective of building many more houses, I'm surprised no one (Govt/Chief Planners/someone with actual management ability) hasn't tackled this.  Simply hoping an ongoing recruitment drive will fix it is head in the sand stuff and has proven not to work over many years now.  The whole structure needs to change, bureaucracy hugely reduce, repetitive report requirements axed.  Its obviously a toughie....but seems so simple to make better and more efficient from the outside having been through the process.
