I visited the trade plumbing exhibition in Manchester today, mainly to see the Sunamp stand and talk to ASHP and UVC and plumbing suppliers.

One ASHP company we’re displaying a series of non-inverter heat pumps, mainly in sizes below 9kw. I asked why they’d gone down the direct drive route, they said that if connected to a suitable heat dump, such as a Sunamp or Water cylinder then an inverter wasn’t required. What do you think?

I'm not convinced.  The main advantage of having a variable speed ASHP is its ability to modulate down and avoid defrost cycling.  Ours virtually never runs at its full rated power; more often than not it runs at around its minimum power, which significantly reduces the risk of frosting up.
