Hi everyone.

First of all, I hope I've chosen the most appropriate sub for this post - if not, please let me know.

I'd like to tackle these tile sills and I'd be grateful for any advice at all, as I have no experience at all with this sort of thing.

The specific questions I have are:

  1. How can I avoid damaging surrounding brickwork when removing the old tiles and mortar?
  2. Is there a specific type of mortar that I should be using for this job (e.g. do I need to worry about using something that would expand and cause damage)?

This is what I've found so far, mainly by reading this post from @MortarThePoint (thank you):

  1. Stagger the layers (broken bond)
  2. Use a baton to set the angle
  3. minimum 40mm overhang

As I said, I'd be grateful for any advice at all, beyond the specific questions that I've asked. If anyone knows of any instructional material that would help, please point me in that direction - I've not been able to find anything.

Thank so much,

Ed
