Hello

 

Moved from a 5 x 3 to a 6 x 6 garage workshop. 
 

Fitting out, new kit and projects along the way

Following with interest. My son is looking for a workshop space to enable him to go it alone and start his own carpentry business. 
 

He’s struggling to find anywhere but a garage wasn’t on his shopping list so maybe that would be a good starting point.

I have bought a house with a double garage so fortunately won’t be paying rent. I did find a cheap 5.7 x 4.4 rental before we decided to move though. Cheap being £185/month plus VAT. So it is definitely do-able. Although if your son rents somewhere then he won’t want to spend money doing the place up, but could invest the money in better kit so there are definitely positives to renting. Haven’t moved yet so won’t be starting for a couple of months. Rich

We were lucky enough to have a 4000 sq ft workshop that came with our house so I went from a 10' x 8' shed to a 14 room labyrinth!  It isn't in great condition so once we've built the new house 'phase 2' will be to look at demolishing the existing workshop and building something better.  My wife has ideas of a AirBNB but I'm thinking along the lines of a workshop where local carpenters/hobbyists can come along, use my tools (or their own) and just have space to make stuff.  I haven't looked into researching how much of a demand there might be but your son's search makes me think there might be a demand for people like your son just starting out.

I would be inclined to agree, that sounds like a great idea.

It would seem cruel to have them sitting there but not free for them to use!

 

Also, that could be the draw for people starting out who can't afford things like bandsaws, planer/thicknessers etc

 

Granted there might be insurance issues but not insurmountable and, done properly, I could buy new toys (I mean tools...) and have others pay for them.

@Bancroft All good points , I feel suitably humbled 😄. My son would love to have access to just such a facility whilst he gets up and running.

There would definitely be a demand for a shared space or smaller rented units. Just depends on location. If you’re very rural then you obviously won’t get the demand. Hobbyists or aspiring carpenters won’t want to travel far around their day jobs. I’d be interested to see what you do with the space though. Rich
