Question about low threshold bar for an external front door

I am about to have the old entrance front porch door replace with a split single French door. Access with a wheelchair is occasionally needed. Is aluminium the only type of low threshold bar available and if so, does installing a low threshold bar create more heat loss? Read up on u-values of threshold bars etc but I am none the wiser as each company rates theirs as the best!
