Eave ventilation for timber frame garage roof

I'm in the process of building a wooden garage - I've been drawing the plans up as I go on SketchUp but am a bit confused at what to do on the eaves. My plan is to batten off the wall sheathing for my cladding, and maintain an air gap between the battens all the way to the top of the wall. Can I then just fix a ventilated soffit with the vents at the batten side so the roof is ventilated from the bottom of the cladding, or does it need to be more direct into the eaves?
