Hello and good afternoon from Wigan,

I ripped my gas fire out last week, i got it properly capped of by a gas engineer on Monday..

I was left with a big hole in the wall, with a massive draft coming down the chimney. I was looking at stuffing some rockwool insulation up the chimney, of which i was going to ask.

After reading various furoms etc, i decided against it as it may cause damp. I bricked it up this afternoon.

Its a 1970s house with a wooden floor an airvents coming underneath.

I will be getting it plastered and fitting an electrical fire just for aesthetics.

Have i done the right thing here?

Thanks Oppy

If capped off there shouldn’t be any draughty unless the chimney is in a poor state and allowing air to blow in through missing mortar

My mate is a roofer, the chimney is in a good state. But it isn't capped off, now you mention it i will get it capped off.

Ahh, yes I read it as chimney capped, when you meant the gas supply. Good thing you didn’t shove insulation up there as it would get wet and cause problems with plaster etc. plus always a good idea after capping the top to keep a small grill or vent in fireplace to ventilate the space and allow it to dry out for a while but this isn’t critical if the chimney is in good order

There is a small hole were the gas supply went into the void. I'll leave it at that for now until we sort everything proper.

This was just a quick cheap job to tidy the front room up as it(was) an eye sore...

Cheers Markc!
