Replace paver jointing

Hi,

 

We paid a landscaper to build a patio for us using paving blocks. He used building sand for the jointing which we've recently discovered through research is the wrong type of sand to use for the jointing. Can we simply dig out a little of this sand from the joints and replace with kiln dried sand or should we try and remove it all? What's the most efficient way to replace it?
