Sie
Afternoon all, looking for some advice.. I’ve discovered that a previous owner removed the downstairs chimney breast, but left the smaller breast in the bedroom unsupported. I’ve checked under the bedroom floor and can see the brickwork just floating, with the chimney flue blocked with cement. I’d like to get the chimney breast rebuilt downstairs with blockwork so it can rejoin and support the rest of the stack, and get our log burner moved from the other room into this chimney. I’m confused about how our bricklayer can rebuild it to match the other breast (36cm deep) and then reduce the depth in the floor space to the upstairs breast (12cm)? Anyone ever come across this? thanks Sie
joe90
Any decent bricklayer can do this, either a lintel or corbeled brickwork will do this.
Sie
Thanks Joe, I wondered if corbeled brickwork might be the answer. I presumed a lintel on its own would support but leave the flammable materials (e.g. floor joists) without any protection from the flue liner when it’s installed.
