Dormer bungalow smoke alarms

Recommended Posts

Moving into a 1960s dormer bungalow where the 1st floor has been used as an anexe and has a kitchen. I want to change this to a bedroom and understand that i will need building reg sign off to do this. As we have now established it was originally built like this when changing the room to a bedroom will it need to comply with latest building regs?

We literally planned on removing all of the kitchen units, getting a plumber to remove the sink and sparky to re-wire. Now worried that its going to open a can of worms!!

Question also around the existing smoke alarm which is battery powered, will this need to be changed to a linked mains unit? There is currently one on the landing and one in the hallway, both are cheap battery powered units.

Many thanks.

Yes, will have to be mains powered.

basically the first detector gets a mains cable 2 core and earth to it and then 3 core and earth runs to the next and next detector, just looping in and out.

other option is radio bases which just means each detector needs a 2core and earth supply and the link between is done by radio.
