HolyCow
Hello one and all, originally from Nottinghamshire I've some how settled in Berkshire (near Windsor of all places) and been here over 15 years. Have a semi-detached with existing single storey extension. Started way back in 2017 the process of talks with Architect, adding a second storey and roof to the current single storey extension, adding 2 bedrooms and another bathroom to the main house. Getting planning was reasonably pain free, we got it in 2018, but finding a builder we trusted and within our budget (£1,750/m2) took us ages as we were getting in quotes at nearer £3,000/m2. Anyway, build is going well, started end of Nov '19 and we survived the rains such we got water tight by Christmas. But over the horizon, storm clouds have been gathering. Basically a close family member (my In-laws) has Alzheimer's and is deteriorating quickly. I'd like to convert my extension in to a "Granny Flat" so my In-Laws can live next door but not have access to our house. My father-in-law is determined to have his own utilities and doesn't want to be a burden (he's a top bloke!) I won't put my questions in, but I've a million and one questions about implications of this change of use and fearful of attracting CIL if I convert to another dwelling. Won't bore you with too much details today, but generally work is going well and first fix underway as I type. (For info I've bitten the bullet and put another staircase in so I can wall off the "two" houses. Looks a great forum, so looking forward to any help you can give once I get time to write some questions in the appropriate Subject Areas. Belated Happy New Year to all!!!! Regards HolyCow!!!! Redoctober
Welcome to the forum - I was born and dragged up in Windsor so know the area well - Left after 24 years and still return to visit family. Great area. Now becoming established in the Scottish Borders following retirement and a new built house back in 2018 - Any way enough about me - Good luck with your project and I'm sure you will be suitably advised once you start firing off your questions.
Stewpot
Welcome. I'm not that far away from you, but am currently buying a building plot in northern territories. And best wishes with your project - I've seen what Alzheimer's can do, and sadly, wishes alone won't be enough.
