  1. Re-building a 1970's split roof style house situated in a 1/4 acre plot beside Belfast lough. The project is designed to be as close to passifhaus standards as possible and to be completed end of September 2024. Innovations are the use of Cork insulation sourced directly from Portugal and the use of a Nulok roofing system for my PV. \the house is situated only 50 feet from the sea and is upside down living with the bedrooms downstairs and living area upstairs with a large cantilevered balcony and huge triple glassed window area to capture the views and changes that we get to the natural light here in Northern Ireland. The house itself once finished will look something similar to a classic HuffHaus, but purely by coincidence. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has fitted a NuLok system as I've had a few issues getting info out of the supplier.
  2. I'm sold on the idea of Nulok. But....read on I have talked to and exchanged emails with the current importer The business has been operating for 2 years. But more than long enough to avoid this sort of thing. A whois.com search doesn't inspire confidence either. The company will not take credit card transactions. I have asked by email for customer references. The answer I got was evasive: no references, just links to commercial partners. A chat with @PeterStarck (who fitted his roof with Nulok) confirmed that the system is indeed worth detailed consideration. But Peter bought from a different importer who appears not to be in business any longer. I have searched for alternative suppliers of the Nulok. No joy. Anyone know anything about the current Nulok importer, or know of a supplier other than Lilyash.com? I would be most grateful if you could help me ..... thanks Ian
  3. Sufferin' scaffold boards Batman! Them boards is a flyin' ! Where to Robin? Off the scaffold and onto the roof Batman And there indeed they sat sneering at us. This one is quite artfully placed... This one was angrier and smashed a few more tiles than the first one And now for the good news. The tiles are Nulok tiles. Theres already quite a bit written about them - here if you want to follow it up The good thing about them is that they are very easy to replace : I mean even a doddery old codger like me can do it First, throw the broken tiles off the roof (yes I checked to see if Debbie was out of range) and and then replace the tiles. I haven't done that yet...... because For once I obeyed SWMBO, and came down off the scaffold because it was quite lively up there. But not before I had attached the scaffold boards to the scaffold with 3 tonne straps and not before I had thrown one scaffold board per bay down off the scaffold. I wanted to allow the pressure from tonight's gusts to dissipate rather than lift. So now, from the ground the scaffold looks like this; Replacing the tiles? Easy. Slide a new one under the clips. Job done. Had our roof been a normally slated roof, couldn'a done that now could I? Well - I'll do it when the wind dies down; have to do what SWMBO says (occasionally).
  4. Who says roofing doesn't pay? The retired roofer of my acquaintance turns up in his sleek drop-head Merc. Smelling of new leather, a spec of dust here and there, he daintily alights from his car. Rather like a catwalk model, he removes his shades (driving shades you understand, not the roofing shades he uses), puts them in their case, and changes from his bordello-ready driving shoes to his work boots. He's brought his retired mate along fer 't 'craik - laak. A small piece of carpet ( a sample piece) is dropped on the dusty drive, and the bordello-creepers are neatly dropped, side by side, in the exact middle of the carpet . Whassa matter? I ask: Had a bad day? Wodjer mean? Shoes, I say, pointing at them. They are pointing North - South and not East - West like the other roofers who visit here. A big grin. The piss-taking had started before he got to the scaffold . The next hour was going to be fun. Tha's got sum rewfin called Noooooluck, I 'ere. Nulok, I counter. Ya wut? Nulok, Jim. He reaches up to his forehead ostensibly to push his hair back. In reality, he switched his hearing aid on. His mate does the same. Now that, that's a real compliment. They are both listening - or attempting to. More than I get from the average teenager. So I dig the bits and bobs out and he looks at them. Wha's 'at grewve fer then? (top of the image) Dunno, mate says I. Then a gentle sucking sound: the old fogey's sucking his teeth clean, I conclude. Wha's 'at nick fer then? (bottom of the tile) Dunno, mate says I. 'Eeeer, sin this? Wha? The back of the tile does indeed have the word Happiness emblazoned on its surface. You couldn't make it up could ya? I mean, just imagine being the tool maker for the mould in which the tiles are made...... Oh, by the way , the customer wants you to engrave the letters H A P P I N E S S on the back of the mould. Ya wot? Yew avin' a laugh? If it had been me I would have been sorely tempted to change it slightly: but in present company I'd better not write it down. Just ask yourself: how would a French person tend to pronounce Happiness? ..... Remembering that they don't pronounce the letter H. On to the battens They're not messin' abart are they? Why metal? Dunno says I. Tha' dun't knaw much duz ya....... He has a point. And I've delved round 'tinternet for hours as you will suspect. After they both left (of which more in the next post) I came up with this Installation_manualUSA.pdf Something new to get my DIY head into. The current Nulok videos are for advertising purpose, I think. As they left, because the roof of the car was down (they must both have had fond memories of when they were on the pull, I think) I noticed them both surreptitiously switching their hearing aids off. Bless them. Here's looking forward to their return. Installation_manualUSA.pdf
  5. Monday morning 0900 sharp it arrived. Superb shipping company: they range me twice to confirm they were arriving. A cheerful Brummie driver (well .... Halesowen is that Brum?) told me that he hadn't had a site H+S briefing for many years. How long did that take? 30 seconds tops. I write this post as a DIYer and a self-builder. I'm in the middle of the full-on DIY experience, and that's why I chose Nulok. I dunno about where you are , but round here, ya jus' can't get the staff guv. It looks as if I might be able to manage it on my own . But then again..... The Delivery Note shows that the all up weight if the delivery was 2.7 tonnes. Imagine my delight then to have to handball it all off the side of the road myself. DIY can be a bit of a bastard sometimes. I have a trailer onto which we should have been able to simply slide the load off the wagon . But I was so exhausted on Sunday night, I didn't unload the last load from the trailer . That'll learn me, wunnit? 5.4 tonnes later (once onto the trailer, once off, 2 lots of 2.7) Can't take a joke? Shouldn'a started this self build should I? A decent Poldark-sweat later (Demelza would have swooned), I had both earned a sherbet, and the further hearty dislike of neighbours who had to slow down to drive past the load sitting in the road. Funny how the bin lorry could get past nay borra Jimmie ( he's Welsh) Up yours too pal. So, unvarnished here's some piccies. I'll be tekin' it slow (back hurts a bit) and posting my Laurel and Hardy-esque progress . Well just Laurel..... That's half the load(ish) for 88 square meters Here's the battens which are metal One pack of tiles is about 1 square meter. Each tile is 400 by 400. The tiles are supported by metal channels which sit either side of it. I hope to have recruited a young lad (lad was previously autocorrected to lady: I can wish) to give me a hand. But more of this later. Bettcha can't wait can ya?
