jack1962 replied to jack1962's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Hi Nod here is a wee selection of pics,,,i am trying to get them to give me the specs they work to,, they did quote BS EN 14250 which relates to the topic of - TIMBER STRUCTURES - PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS FOR PREFABRICATED STRUCTURAL MEMBERS ASSEMBLED WITH PUNCHED METAL PLATE FASTENERS -
Has anyone got any info on the standard, it is to do with product requirements for prefabricated structural members assembled with punched metal plate fasteners.

Hi Nod well the update is they wanted me to send photos, i told no, i want to see a rep and he can take photos, i have since discovered also that the gable ladders, the nails have been shot through and have missed the connecting timber, i was also ready to put a truss up and discovered a nail plate missing, I got back onto chorley spoke to the production manager, he stated he would site tomorrow, then i received a voicemail asking if i could put it off until wednesday as his car is in the garage. I have since made another phone call to Manager and i expressed in no uncertain terms my thoughts on his excuse about car in garage, I have halted truss work as the issues mentioned have to be resolved. I live in scotland and i ordered my trusses through pasquill in Uddingston as they are approx 10 miles from me, and any issues could have been dealt with local. i have yet to be given a reason as to why the production was moved to Chorley, with the result of them being produced in chorley , Uddingston are stepping back from it. again something i find irritating as the order, design and payment was all placed through Uddingston -

Has anybody had any dealings with Pasquil manufacturing plant in chorley, if so how was the quality of the product?

SABERREFIX HAND NAIL PLATE GALVANISED DX275 150MM X 75MM X 1MM Could i use them in the scenario below. When i have the level required under stud position, flip the sole plate back over and put a couple of nails to bold them in place then flip it back over and secure to concrete slab with my Hilti Hammer fixings? The finished surface of the substructure supporting the timber frame should be reasonably level. However, where packing is required to ensure the timber frame or sole plate is level, the following three alternative options are acceptable. The options given are for packing up to 20mm. Packing exceeding 20mm should be agreed between the timber frame manufacturer's engineer and NHBC. 1 Permanent structural packing under sole plate The sole plate is levelled on temporary spacers. Once the first lift construction - wall panel and first floor floor structure (or roof structure in a single storey building) - has been erected, permanent packing is placed under the sole plate. This permanent packing can be: free flowing non-shrinkable grout for the full length and width of the sole plate, or individual packers placed under each load point (e.g. stud or pos

Hi Gus Thanks for the in depth reply. I am fixing sole plate on concrete slab, cam i level it out perhaps using metal plate say every 1200mm under studs then fill with mortar? I have no overhang and i am 140mm soleplate with an average under hang of approx 10mm. On Checking the rest of the perimeter of the slab and taking from the highest point there does not appear to be a variation of more than 10mm below the high point,,is slate an acceptable packer?

What is an acceptable tolerance when putting down a sole plate? when to pack and not to pack?

jack1962 replied to jack1962's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
i see that the 8mm hole size fischer fixing A2 ,,from what i think i am reading right is 0.27kn...for the Hilti it appears for the 8mm hole size fixing it is 0.30kN Nrd & 0.50kN Vrd ...what does theNrd and Vrd mean,,any idea? -
Hilti HPS-1 IMPACT ANCHOR
jack1962 replied to jack1962's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
the spec for build says Hilti and i was just wondering if there was a comparable alternative with the same spec, it is for fixing sole plate to concrete slab -
Any body have one of those, just discovered the can fire round head nails, though it is a clipped head framing nailer. they can use the paslode round head, just thought i would share it, increases the flexibility in nail choice

jack1962 replied to jack1962's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Have just done a little more reading,, the Hilti are made from carbon steel and zinc coated, the shear strength is apparently greater than the stainless steel for same diameter of fixing -
Has anyone used an equivalent fixing for sole plate to concrete slab, i was thinking of using Fischer Hammer Fixing A2 Stainless Steel - 8 x 100mm, any ideas? where do you find the sheer strengrh data?

Hi mike i have been told it is structural grade and sourced from Kronospan, though they have not stated as yet whether or not it is OSB 2 or 3. I have e-mailed Kronospan to query is this the way the normally send their materials out of production and how could i tell what grade it is other than being told so by Builders Merchant

I have been told it is structural Grade and their source is Kronospan, though i am still waiting on a reply as to whether or not it is OSB2 or 3 and as to why they do not have stamped identification on them. I have also sent a query to Kronospan in UK. I will also speak to Building control for their thoughts on it as i am half way through constructing the timber frame panels but i am not to keen on sheeting them yet until i get some more info. The last thing i want is to have the ground floor erected and be told it is not adequate.

Hi Mike , no it came banded and shrink wrapped. Yes it is for the outer sheathing on the external timber panels and for some racking load bearing internal panels.

Ouch - Timber frame price up £4,600 between design and manufacture
jack1962 replied to Haylingbilly's topic in Timber Frame
I ordered time 3 weeks ago and it cost £4786 and when i originally priced it Aug last year it would have cost me £3054, i also priced up my trusses last year and i am frightened as to what the price will be now -
Hi there Temp thanks for the reply, the reason i am a bit confused with it is that on looking at a site Building.co.uk, it has an article on OSB and it states that all boards should have various markings on them to identify manufacturer , ce marking , panel type, thickness etc etc
-
Hi there i am just new to the site so please excuse me if i have not created this topic in the appropriate section. My query is to do with OSB 3 Sheeting, i have just received a pallet of this from my builders merchant as i requested, i asked for OSB3. In the past when i have ordered the odd sheet of OSB3, i normally see writing on it stating what grade it is, however the stuff i have just received from builders. all the sheets are blank with nothing indicating what grade or manufacturer. Is this normal? The board sizes are 2397mm * 1197mm allowing for 3mm expansion gap i presume. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. This is our 1st self build.. Regards Jack & Yvette
