  1. no i probably would add a second ladder - thing is think if i had loft conversion think i would have to make first floor special safe too just to be sure possibly overkill but hey life is worth it and ladder quite cheap - thing the extra window input and ladder might just be worth it plus the extra sunshine into the house . shower room instead of light and fan thing going on - just love a window but why have it in a roof when you could have it in a wall gable end - probably would have roof velux also but not for fire exit
  2. as you can see is just an aluminium box but there is a peg pin at the top which you take it out - as long as not any interference with that - in an emergency and the ladder drops down for easy enough exit
  3. thanks sorry https://www.safelincs.co.uk/saffold-fold-out-fixed-fire-escape-ladder/?sku=SAF18&fGB=true
  4. so is it cheaper therefore just to send it back into the grid and leave out batteries altogether - sounds a lot simpler - have to admit dont really trust batteries that much - you have to charge them just right and as you say they still give out on you and if connected to the grid why not use it if we all put it back in with free energy then perhaps eventually the cost will come down who knows 0 rememer the days when a 1.5KB hard drive pc cost £1800??
  5. of course am still to figure out how much energy i use over the winter plus did you say per litre of oil was 10'5kw? that is interesting - thanks
  6. ok so if you have a number of panels i dont really know how many i could fit up there - seems to be packs where you buy 10 panels plus inverter and battery bank for around £3k, then maybe you could perhaps put one or two high on a south facing wall or do they all have to be together for the wiring?
  7. is cheapest power voltaic ( if you are lucky to have a roof / southern facing roof or safe place to leave your panels_ or hydro if you are lucky to have a strong burn / stream on your property?
  8. ok well again was to add to solar power /photovoltaic and wind is quite strong in these parts - over the fence is an open park so the previous owner grew a large hedge to slow the wind when it is in the south the wind drives the rain in through the door and floor is soaked in minutes but you guys know more about this kind of thing my daughters friend is passionate free energy guy so well we shall see you are probably right but gonna keep an eye on things and keep open mind
  9. well i consider a horizontal would be dangerous unless mounted up high and then you are fighting with planning control and like i said was just an addition not substitute for photovoltaic & battery bank which seem to be being sold in packages these days I have been thinking about this guy since 2010 or 11 Also am wondering if you could put a couple of panels from the pack vertically on the gable end wall which is south facing along with panels on south easterly roof I am being fanciful but think i shall try to investigate and see what comes up now that battery banks seem to have improved
  10. ok well have asked for more info i know that many of these do not work in colder weather but it looks like this one might and of course it spins all which ways looks very similar to the design i found on you tube way back when
  11. So in Scotland stairs need minimum rise of 22cm and width 90cm and going 22.5cm also stairs need platform at top and bottom of flight of at least 90 x 90cm Tapering tread is allowed but the middle of the tread must be each equal and of minimum 22.5cm If the floor goes higher than 4.5 meter then you must have a safe place to wait for help - cherry picker to lift you out so it needs to be fire proof and one exit - the stairs the thing is that when you open the ceiling you create more of an updraft allowing the fire to build faster - i think that is more or less the nutshell And fire escapes are not good well insurance companies dont like them do they - burglars get in and out so much more easily But now we have a new fire escape I was thinking ah well velux fire window good idea but climbing over the roof and gutter hmm - you would need to fix a ladder permanently securely to the roof alongside the window to climb onto and then it would have to hang out past the gutters or you could get stuck and fall problem And then found this brilliant and apparently very easy to fix to the wall fire ladder which is only an aluminium box (sorry burglars) until the emergency - providing you have a flat wall next to your window - and instead of waiting in some rural spot for the fire engine and cherry picker to make their way to your small back yard somehow because roof window are not allowed street side, well you just climb our - clearly with anxious neighbours there to help although you are hardly going to be putting gran in the attic are you https://www.windsolar-products.co.uk/products/nt_whirlwind_turbine.html Any way am thinking this little ladder is going to change so much in the future - it is genius Anyone else got any views
  12. Do not know if anyone is interested but we are in a windy spot and looking at the sleet pelting down driven by a northerly wind am fairly sure i am interested in this 500watt turbine https://www.windsolar-products.co.uk/products/nt_whirlwind_turbine.html with some solar panels, a battery bank, and electric wet hearing system - currently have an old oil fired boulter boiler - which really seems quite efficient except have no idea how much oil am using - so is it ? Dont know if will be able to just swap in an electric combi boiler which will hopefully turn the coal hole in to a lovely indoor airing cupboard And yes will possibly be a bit expensive in winter but surely summer will sort it all out especially if you are chucking electricity back into the grid or am i being fanciful Will my meter not wind backwards and will it all not balance out in the end? plus all those companies that do use electricity in summer they will benefit wont they?
  13. Scot Fire Refs March 2021 : Topmost storey not more than 4.5m 1 route of escape, early warning [3], and: escape windows (see clause 2.9.4) fingers crossed then when they say not more than 4.5 do they mean floor level of third floor? but I suppose once floor support is complete the floor would be more like 5.5v can protected enclousure be the shower /wetroom? with widow and hopefully a fire ladder Topmost storey more than 4.5m but not more than 7.5m [4] 1 route of escape, early warning [3], and: escape windows (see clause 2.9.4), and protected enclosure (see clause 2.9.5), or suppression and enhanced early warning (see clause 2.9.7)
