  1. We are able to build a wall inside and do a taller parapet detail. Not sure how to cap it or slope it? We asked if he consented to putting lead across the top but he did not reply.
  2. We are building a single storey rear extension wall next to our neighbour’s single storey rear extension wall. The neighbour has a pre-finished aluminium capping to their parapet. We intend to form a pitched roof abutting right up to theirs forming a weathering detail - but this is proving decidedly difficult! Our roof pitch will not match theirs. Their roof pitch I estimate is 12 degrees and ours, 15 degrees. Therefore, the lowest part of our roof at wall plate level does not enable a 150mm cover flashing to be formed between the neighbours extension wall and our roof (we can only get say 60-70mm upstand). At the highest level at rear original house external wall abutment, there is healthy say 300-400mm difference in levels down to their parapet which would enable a detail to be created (subject to their agreement) dressing on to their parapet. But the ‘cross over’ space between the two creates a troublesome area difficult to weather properly. It is not really an option to take off the neighbour’s aluminium capping. I understand an option is to form my own parapet which would resolve the issue, but I may lose internal floor space. Any ideas?
  3. Hi We are looking for some advice. We just checked on our loft extension work to find TI-r classic has been used as the membrane for or roof and dormer walls. Tyvek has a density of 125 and the thinner membrane he has used is 100gsm (zone 1-2) only). Its an Edwardian semi in London. They are not the same quality membranes. he roofing membrane is fairly tight but we have cross battens. Currently we have a 50mm gap underneath the membrane to the insulation. We were paying top wack for the roof and had specified Tyvek in our JCT contract. Our concern is not just the few hundred pounds difference in price pocketed by the builder.. ....But the repercussions of a poor membrane in a few years down the line if the membrane fails which could mean stripping and reroofing. We are also worried about a draughty loft conversion which we had on another property when less dense membrane was used, and the membrane degrading. . Anyone any experience of not getting what they specified? And what to do about it, if we ask him to strip the roof, the builder and still has the extension to go, and he likes to find extras. Also are there any other cute short cuts we need to look out for. We also found every 5th course was nailed with 1 nail only. The roof tiles are now on in a record 2 days.
