  1. Ill have to do some research and hope to be able to find these blocks cheap enough not to blow my budget Likeni mentioned before, its 16ft wide so will i still need 25 of these blocks
  2. As for dirt the builder has been taking soil so thats not an issue
  3. These concrete lego blocks, where can i get these and how many will i need. The wall will be approx 16ft across. Was hoping to tarmac or slab..
  4. And rough how much for those 25 blocks. From what i have read, most of the options i cant follow due to budget, but I feel this option is best for me and wont blow my budget. Im just building wall at the moment and will worry about rendering and etc later
  5. Ok will do that. So i buy a few of these and plant them at foundation and then use normal concrete blocks to build up?
  6. These concrete lego blocks, where can i get these and how many will i need. The wall will be approx 16ft across.
  7. I appreicate that prodave and you have been very helpful. You asked for measurements before, which i have now posted. Would 4ft to 5ft sound about right Im going to proceed with caution
  8. I dont thing that story related to me. I do have a builder who will come a build the wall. I suspect everyone is assuming i was going to try myself. He has already said it will be around 9ft high with 3 ft buried for foundation and has said he has been building extentions for a long time. I suspect the way im going to go is carry on digging but instead leaving 4 ft between retaining wall and bay wall, ill leave 5ft. Double block the wall, with columns each side. And then a wall of concrete between wall and soil
  9. Also a neighbour just told me i would need a 12ft wall with 3ft buried as foundation. He said he didnt think the ground infront is supporting the houses and in fact the houses have deep foundation and therefore we can go back as far as we want but then the retaining wall has to be thick and strong. He advised a 12ft wall with 3ft buried, so 9ft wall. As for the actual wall, double blocks, laid flat as opposed to stacked, and then concrete filled between the wall and ground behind. At least 8 pipes for drainage.
  10. If you look at last 2 pics you can see the blue rope going from bay window wall across to lampost. Kept tight to give a straight line and then measurement taken down which was 9ft.
  11. Hi thanks all for advice. Budget wise is only a few hundreds for parts. All labour is free as my neighbours and brother in law is helping me. I respect your advice on here and if its the case i need a se then ill have to give up and stop everything. And leave the front as it now. Prodave, i have taken the measurements you have asked for. So from the top at the bay window, to the bottom at the boundary line, ensuring it stays high and level and straight, the distance was 29ft As for how high, i used a rope, tied to bottom of wall at bay window and ran down straight and tied it to the lamppost adjacent to front of house and then used a spirit level to check rope was straight and then messaged from rope down to footpath at boundary. On one side it was 9ft high and the other was 7.4ft high. And thats because of slope of fooftpath. So 29th length from bay wall to boundary And max height is 9ft.
  12. The pallet i have already bought are 440mm, 240mm, 100mm Which are just standard concrete blocks Ive also got 10 wider ones. Will these not do the job?
  13. You say buttress sections, can you explain please what that means. And what did you mean the two ends turned in? Our plan was to turn out away from house to make a u shape.
  14. ProDave, yes exactly that, lol can you recall how much distance between the front of the house and the retaining wall you put in.
  15. Declan52, thanks for your advise, im not stable on my feet so i cant have any slope at all. so it needs to be flat ground which i park on. in regards to digging at the front of the house, once we reach the concrete, how will we know if the concrete is deep enough?
  16. ok ill go measure up. thanks all and speak to you soon. just need to wait for neighbour to help me out as im not as agile as i once was. lol
  17. i think the reason i am having difficulty in understanding the 45 degrees rule is i think because the drawings illustrate the level of the land needed to be dug out is straight not slopped but if you look at the pcis of the front of house, you can see the current level is sloped. so dont know if that clears anything up
  18. if that really is the case, then ill have to abandon the whole thing. i was trying to understand the procedure of using the imaginary line to work out how far we can go back but im still having trouble understanding how to do that
  19. Randbuild thankyou also for your advise. ive taken a look at the info about the wall and will definately take into account but can anyone help by estimating how far from the front of the house this retaining wall should be placed.
  20. i think i might have confused the point. on/off drawing showing the side of the house is spot on, however the current level of the ground is not straight. if you please take a look at my drawing showing the side of the house, there is no access from the front, the front door is at the side of the house facing the street. there is a bay window infront of the proposed drive. then in front of the bay window there is small peice of ground u can stand on which is flat, approx 1ft then it slopes down all the way to the bottom wall at the boundary which has been removed now.
  21. as to my drawing, the walls were going to be building using the blocks, will they be what you have referred to as a u shape wall? and as to a SE, genuinely dont have funds to be able to do that. if i did i would have. some just relying on help and advise.
  22. also it wont end up being a slope, it will be all dug out so the car can park flat. and not on a slope, so that my car can be driven on and its flat land. one other thing, once dug out, we are going to be putting up walls using concrete blocks. so one will be putting a wall up between the remaining land in front and either side also, see poorly drawn pic below.
  23. again thankyou for your help, and really appreciate the drawing. but im still a little confused. i understand i stand at the bay window then dig down a little until i can touch concrete and then i dont understand what i need to do to work out where to stop digging to.
