@Mr Punter Thank you. Do you think over doing u values is needed? Ours is meant to be 0.18 for walls 0.15 ceilings

Actis or fiberglass insulation? We have 225 studs in external walls and ceilings. Including the vaulted ceilings. I cant see much difference in the prices. Actis seem to be able to smash the u values to pieces so we would be over insulated. However will have to counter batten everything. Or mineral wool and we wouldn't have to counter batten… but still able to achieve the u values?

B we were thinking was only option. If we do more stone we are going to use thermo wood at the top. Just figuring wether to keep the cill up that high, or pack the timber out so the cladding runs over the stone…

Yes i was thinking b (accoya) really was the only option in my opinion. Although allot of people just use thermo pine!

@JamesP hi James yes i presume we will have to just use bigger timbers and use bigger skrews i guess… or counter batten it 4 times… still working that one out. I am confident skrewing a 3x2 using coach skrews but i feel 4x2 or bigger is allot to skrew through

@JamesP perfect thats just like ours will be. How did you pack off the cladding to bring it over the stone work? Ours is timber frame and i need to pack it out 200mm ….

Thank you James p. Many people have said this. And incorporating a slate cill would look very nice. Vertical cladding we are having.. but i wonder if we packed the cladding so it then came over the stone work… ?

Hi our plans state stone to the window cills then timber clad above.. its a class q. We wondered if we should bring the stone higher so to enhance the weatherproofing around the windows opposed to timber.. then bring timber over the stone face at the gables. Do we think this is necessary? How much timber cladding is too much?

I think, maybe bringing the timber out over the stone may be easier to achieve a better finish if it were higher up. Although it may not look so architecturally designed maybe…

@torre Thank you. In my late mind i felt that more stone would add more value to the house. However i can also see it at the cills easily, likewise, taking it to top of standard height windows is hard to visualise and if it doesn't look right it will be worse!

Hi all, we have drawings for finishing the outer leaf of this self build with the stone finishing at window cill height, slate cill then timber clad above. Were wondering if it would be too much wood cladding..?? Now we have started with our stone work we wondered whether it was worth bringing the stone higher to the top of the windows! (as it were, but in these photos to the split in the windows) ? and above the rest of the normal height windows. What do you all think? Carry on using the slate cill, packing out the cladding just 25mm back from the stone, still using the slate cill for a nice effect. To add- we have a canopy going in from the front door to the back door) for looks! Thanks in advance.

John mo- i am not sure! Same material, just slightly higher 🤔 i wouldn’t think planning would worry but its build regs maybe..

Hi all, we are converting a steel frame cattle shed. We have had class q, further more full planning for material amendments. On our plans we have stone to the bottom of the windows, then timber clad above. (Stone work works to be 50sqm we have 40sqm of glass and 140sqm of timber cladding. Being a chippy, i have built all the timber frame on site between the steels as per plans, and sheeted off with tf200. windows are in, works inside currently being carried out. originally the stone was to be built using the sure cav 50 system up to the bottom of the windows, capped with a 200mm slate cill, followed by cladding above (average 2.9 above including the gables) so the water run off from the face of cladding runs onto the cill. questions i have, What do you all think about allot of cladding on a house, will it effect values? we like it but was going to use accoya with its warranty… I would like to add more stone work to finish it at the top of the windows, do away with the slate cill, and pack out the timber frame so to then bring the cladding then over the face of the stone… but would have to pack 175mm or so to get it past the stone face and sure cav. (surecav 50 & 4”cut stone) Thanks in advance.
