Thanks Russell, Luckily I have no issues with access but was concerned if they built right upto the boundry then i would need to build my foundations away from their new extension thus restricting my space to build. Currently my patio is right up against their boundry.

Thanks Mr Punter Yes I think I will chat with them

Hi Everyone, Ive just received a letter about an application for a neighbours extension. Can they build right up to my boundry or must they leave a gap. If they build upto the boundry do I have right to use that wall for my own future extension? I plan in the future to build my own extension so just concerned this will restrict my build.

What mortar mix to use here in 1930's inner wall

Hi Thanks for the reply There are no cracks on the outside. The outside is pebbledash. I believe that is all the original lintel and bricks. So should i just use cement mortar or lime Any suggestion for the mix to use? I've attached a picture of the left side of the wall. This is a terraced house so that wall is also part of the neighbours And this is the outside of the wall. Ignore the missing pebbledash just above the door. That was me just checking something. -
Hi Everyone, We have stripped our bathroom of the old tiles and plaster underneath. We will be using plasterboard and installing new bathroom tiles on all the wall area. Before i do that I would like to repoint where the mortar is missing. What mortar mix should i use? As there is only a few places missing the mortor I was just thinking to use regular cement mortar but I imagine the old mortar would have been a lime mix. Thanks in advance

Thanks Conor That was my worry. I just spoke to the door installer and he wasn't concerned as they have sealed it all correctly. He said I just need to use insulation plaster board and it will be ok. I'm still not convinced though. My thoughts are to coat the pebbledash with some moisture barrier and then fit insulation board over the top?

Hi everyone Reposting here as I think it fits this damp section better. I have had some upvc doors installed and I have been left with some of the exterior pebbledash render being revealed on the interior part of the door recess . The plan is to bond and then skim with plaster to blend into the interior room. My question is can we simply plaster onto the pebbledash or should we remove it first. My concern is any damp seeping in from the existing pebbledash. Thanks

One thing I am concerned about is any moisture being absorbed from the outside pebbledash and soaking into the interior plaster. Could that happen?

Thats great to hear. Thank you so much proDave👍

Thank you Redbeard. If i could not remove the bricks i was going to add extra batons on the existing one to create an air gap and then use PIR Insulated plasterboard. This was going to be skimmed over with regular plaster. I have never heard of wood-fibre so thats something new. Do you think my original plan is ok or is the wood-fibre better.

thanks redbeard, my gut feeling is that the the bricks are the render carrier but was not sure. I think i'll leave them as is. Thanks!

Hi everyone. I am planning to insulate my bay window wall. I removed all the old plaster and am left with this. There are some bricks inbetween the upright wooden batons. I don't think they are used for any support. Is it ok to remove these bricks. The outside of the wall is a pebble dash render. Thanks in advance. Qamar qamar

Wooden lintel over door. Should I change?
qamar replied to qamar's topic in RSJs, Lintels & Steelwork
Thanks everyone. I spoke to a structural engineer and he said that it was common for the inner leaf (i assume bricks course) would have a wooden lintel. The outer leaf in my case has a Masonary Arch. So i am ok but he advised i change the wooden lintel for a concrete one as the wooden ones can rot. My one is showing some signs of getting soft in areas so I will change. Below is the door from the outside which does look like an arch -
Hi Everyone, I was getting rid of loose plaster in the kitchen to get ready for skimming. Above the kitchen door there is a wooden lintel which seems to be resting on the inner course of bricks. Looking through the gap at the side of the lintel I can't seem to see any other lintel so am wondering how the above wall is being supported. The outside wall has a pebbledash render so I plan to chip away to see if I see another lintel. The wooden lintel is starting to show some effects of damp rot on the surface, probably due to a steamy kitchen. Just looking for advice on what my plan of action should be here. Also is it common for older houses to have wodden lintels like these. I think the house may have been built around 1930 - 1949 Thanks in advance

Hi Everyone, Really sorry to hear of your cousin calvinhobbes 😔 Thanks for the suggestion Mike2016. I think you are right its safer to get someone to just clean the gutters. But i will be needing a ladder for other work around the house and it would be good to have one that can reach the gutters too. Would a 7 meter ladder do the trick?

Hi Everyone, I need to buy a ladder to maintain my house gutters. What size should be best. Looking for something not too heavy. Also where would I rest the ladder. Thanks in advance
