Hi everyone looking for an inexpensive MvHR option. We are soon to be starting 1st fix in next few months and would not want to be spending £10k on an a full MvHR company system. if anyone has experience of doing the own set up/what units they used/was it off the shelf etc? Finally am I right in saying once installed, get an independent company to certify it? many thanks

Self build house - is MVHR worth cost?
Wadrian replied to Wadrian's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Apologies for the 10 month delayed reply. If I am honest I had completely forgot about the usefulness of this hub and have not been checking into it. I am working through the replies to determine whether this is the right option for me to install MVHR. I like the idea of the diy option especially if people experiences have been quite good. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I will update again. -
Thank for the comprehensive reply. Building control know we are having mini piles. I still need to get the method statement and risk assessments off the piling contractor. The piling contractor has informed me that the grundomat method they are using and the distance between the 2 properties - he says there is no risk of any damage.

Hi, I am planning to speak to the neighbour tomorrow. Can also get some pictures and video of elevation next to my house.

Hi, yes I shall respond. I didn’t know there was an option to do this, but will do from now on.

Hi could really do with some feedback on this. I am doing mini piling on my self build which is due to start next Wednesday! Just read that I need to issue a section 6 notice to my neighbour. The house is 4m from neighbour and I am using 150mm pile using grundomat method. It is a detached house and next door is a detached house which is 4m from my new build. my piler says I am fine and can just do the work. Any had experience of this?

4m single storey rear extension in conservation area
Wadrian replied to Wadrian's topic in House Extensions & Conservatories
Thanks for the reply. The extension will be outside of the RPA of the trees. -
Hi i am Looking to build a 4m rear single storey rear extension on a detached house. It is in a conservation area. Will be built using similar materials to house. I have checked the LPA website and there is no specific article 4 removing PD rights. I also have the added issues that there are TPOs in trees on the site (RPA areas etc). I have discussed with planning consultant. He says if I apply for planning, likely to get turned down because of proximity to TPO trees. also said if you do the extension under PD rights, don’t have to factor trees in. so there is the conundrum. He says If I apply to council for Full planning. Likely to turn down because of TPO trees or I just build it under PD rights. any thoughts?

Hi everyone just broke ground yesterday for our self build. I Informed the building control that we should be ready in next 2 weeks for the foundation inspection. I had an email from building control to say they will not come to site until they have receive our M&E design (heating, ventilation, hot water) is this something I would get a company to do? We are having a Grant ASHP and the manufacturer has designed a suitable tank and cylinder etc. we are also having UFH. Please can anyone advise on How do I go about getting an M&E design? Is it one design or does it require multiple plans from various trades? thanks for any replies in advance

Living in caravan while self build - car insurance?
Wadrian replied to Wadrian's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Many Thanks for this. That makes a lot of sense - at least having an address means we can get everything correctly addressed in terms of banks, driving license etc. We move into the caravan on Monday - so hopefully haven’t left things too late! So you suggested the house name when you registered for council tax and they accepted that. Think we will be having a house name as the house we sold(next door to our building plot) also has a house name. Was the process of registering for council tax easy? -

Thank you to the individuals who took the time to respond to my request. As always it is do good to hear of people individual experience. MVHR seems a really good system to install and relatively inexperience if DIY install.
