Making an opening in sub-floor brickwork - Steel needed or?

Hi all,

 

Because a bunch of reasons, I need better access to a particular area of the sub floor.  The easiest route would be to make some sort of opening in the wall pictured below. I've triple checked and this subfloor wall is supporting the floor only, there is no brick/block wall above it. 

in that case, what are the steps to open it up? and will it need a specific steel beam? i'd say for comfort sake, 600mm height/width would be fine for me to get through.

probably ok to just remove it depending on the condition of the joists and their length, being so close to the joist pocket i doubt it would make any difference. If you are worried you could just remove a course of bricks and whack in a concrete lintel from one of the sheds, they are only about £15 for a 900mm one, then pull out all the bricks below.
